Guayaguayare United Sports and Cultural Club has launched its first-ever sports olympiad, with the primary objective of opening positive avenues for the development of the youth in the community. The organisation received a major boost of $350,000 from corporate sponsor, Hydro Tech Ltd, to mount the massive project.
The opening ceremony took place at the La Savanne recreation ground, Newlands, Guayaguayare, where the teams that will be participating in various events over a three-month period, paraded before a colourful crowd. The day also featured exhibition cricket, football and netball matches, as well as fun events for the kids. According to coordinator of the olympiad, Nicola Cabrera, the community of Guayaguayare had suffered over the past decade in the spheres of culture and sports, and this had impacted negatively on the youths. She noted that the club was formed in 1999 with the goal of “recovering the lost traditions” of sporting and cultural excellence. Cabrera praised Hydro Tech for its wisdom and generosity in partnering with the club to create a positive window of opportunity for the youths.
The company’s Human Resources/Public Relations Manager, Giselle Noel, articulated the commitment of owner and Managing Director of Hydro Tech Lt5d, Trevor Lynch. She said the company was pleased to be associated with the objectives of the club in providing opportunities for the young people to excel at various sporting events, and for creating a bond of togetherness among the residents of the wider Mayaro community. Sporting events that will be featured during the olympiad include netball, basketball, cricket, football and athletics. Winners in each discipline will be awarded $5,000 and a trophy.
